In July, I’m going to work at the Harriette Austin Writers Conference as a volunteer. I did this once before, and for a shy gal like me, it was a perfect opportunity. I’m not as shy when I have work to do. Another perk as a volunteer is that they will allow me to submit a manuscript for a critique by an agent or editor. I do have to pay the $50 for the critique, but I don’t have to pay the $190 registration fee for Saturday’s attendance since I’m going to work there. We are counting pennies at my house, so this is a huge benefit for me.
The conference is under a new administration, so I wasn’t sure they were going to allow me to do this again, but I received word yesterday that I can send in a manuscript. I also learned - Eeeck!! - it’s due on June 1st!
I don’t know if my manuscript is ready. I don’t know if I’m ready, but this conference only comes around once a year, so I better take advantage of it while I can!
I have to submit two copies of the following:
-
• the first 15 pages of my manuscript
-
• a synopsis
-
• a cover letter
I’ve done this once before with The River Charmer, and I got some good advice about it, though the agent didn’t request to see more of it. At the least I’d like to hear that my young adult novel has some potential! And I’d love to meet some other writers.
In light of all this, I’m going to do something that makes my heart skip a few beats. I’m going to offer my first 15 pages here for you to read, if you’d like. I know it’s a lot to read, so I certainly don’t expect everyone to do so, but for anyone who finds the time and inclination, I will be indebted to you.
Please take your metaphorical red pen to my manuscript, and tell me what I need to do to make it better! Be honest. After all, how will I become a better writer, if you’re not honest?
I’m going to leave you with this for awhile as I take a break from blogging to work on my synopsis, letter and other research. If you have any trouble with the PDF file, e-mail me at shelli@mamaofletters.com.
Thank you!
Note: The linked file is the final version that I submitted to the conference. Though I’m sure my manuscript will undergo further revisions, I will leave this sample as it is here.
